Iron River Pull
June 19 2009
Well this day started out really long to begin with seeing I got woke up on Thursday at 3:00 p.m. by a phone call, and couldn’t fall back to sleep. I work 3rd shift been doing it for 22 years now so you’d think I’d be use to this by now. But any way I got out of work at 7:00 a.m. and we had to leave for Iron river @ 10:00 so we could put the Truck out on display on Main Street for the general public to view. For the most part we finally got rolling at 10:30 a.m. Made it to Hwy.8 where we had to stop and check the chains on the trailer, and get some liquid refreshments for the ride to hwy. 139, where we stopped at this nice biker bar for lunch and something to wash it down. So back on the road it’s now 12:30 and where 30 minutes from Iron river. When we got to town they had Main Street all blocked off for us. They dropped the ribbons for us to drive in to main street the closed it off again. We pretty much took up the whole block with the 4 trucks and trailers rigs and my double hauler. So we set up head quarters at the Up North Bar where they supplied us with liquid refreshments till 4 p.m.
At 2:00 I tried to take a nap in the cab of my truck with the windows down, there was a nice cool breeze blowing in but once I fell asleep it die down and I woke up in a puddle of sweat @ 3:00 and it was 80 dreg. in the cab. So back to the air conditioning in the bar
And before I knew it, it was 4 p.m. and we had fulfilled our agreement with the Iron County pullers. So off to the fuel station to fill the grunt trucks up and then to the fair ground and off load the trucks and get ready for the pulls to start.
Well I got all the paper work done money envelopes filled and running order filed for the announcers, walked it over to the announcers stand and then went and got something to eat. As I was standing in line they announced the drivers meeting in 5 minutes .. so wow where’d the time go it was going on 6:00 already.
They played the national anthem and boom the pull was on it’s way at 6:05 p.m. we had 5 local classes before the Super Stock Truck class then a break of 4 local classes again before the Modified class and there was another 4 local classes after us. So they have more then enough local Stock trucks too put a pull on. They just ask us to be there to make some noise for there pulls, and we do a good job at making noise.
So here we are watching the first 4 stock classes and as the last class before the WUMPA truck pull there’s this nasty looking Storm cloud twirling around up above us and then it gives us a short burst of rain which actually the track needed moisture at this point anyway so it worked out perfectly.
So ok the class order was Dean, Bruce, Steve Sheedy running Barb’s Truck,
ShaZam and Cody Ladowski driving Jack’s Truck.
Class finished was Dean, Bruce, Cody, ShaZam and then Steve.
I’ll say just that I could not seem to get my tires to hook to the track at all, I tried playing with the throttle all the way down the track and it just didn’t matter. So went to put the Mod tires on.
A few more local stock classes then we where up again. And then the rain came again but it was a light sprinkle.
This time the order was Jack, Dean, ShaZam, Bruce, Tony Kozub driving Barb’s truck and Craig Emmes bring up the rear with Cold Ethyl.
Class finish was Bruce, Dean, Jack, Craig, ShaZam, and Tony
Once again there was nothing for ShaZam to bite to out there I played as long as I thought I could with the throttle, before I just matted it and road it out to where she Stopped.
So we got all loaded up and chained down and we had a few beers to wash all the dust down our throats. And then the big rains came and we got out of the parking area before it turned to mush seeing it’s all clay there under the grass.
Got to the motel checked in and headed to the pool and Hot tub where we sat and drank some more beers till 1:00 a.m. So now for those who have been keeping track it’s now been 34 hours with only a 1-hour nap. So it’s bedtime for this dude.
Before you knew it the sun was coming up and Craig was walking around its 6:00 a.m. saying you going to sleep all day. So I got up and headed down for breakfast. Checked out of the motel and headed home @ 7:30.
Now I don’t know if it’s just that I’m getting older or if my body just can’t handle 34 hour with out sleep. But Saturday I was pretty much junk the whole day. Ended up getting a few Charlie horses in my legs and back and didn’t get much done at all.
Well next week we have Pound WI on Saturday. See ya all there or here …
